One of the most difficult realities faced by people seeking asylum in the UK is the level of financial support they receive. While their claims are being processed, asylum seekers are provided with just 8.86 per week to cover all essential needs - food, toiletries, and transportation. To put that into perspective: 8.86 is less than the cost of a cinema ticket, a sandwich deal at most supermarkets, or a single takeaway coffee each day. It is not enough to live on, and yet this is what thousands of people are expected to survive on while they wait, often for months or years, for a decision on their asylum claim. This support is provided on a pre-loaded ASPEN card, not as cash. Because the card cannot be used to withdraw amounts under 10, there are weeks when an asylum seeker has no access to any funds at all. The government provides asylum accommodation, but this is typically basic hotel rooms or shared housing, often far from local amenities and support networks. There is no access to mainstream welfare benefits, no entitlement to social housing, and (in most cases) no right to work. At AARC, we believe that no one should have to live in poverty while seeking safety. That is why we provide food parcels, clothing, toiletries, and practical support to help fill the gap - and why we campaign for a fairer system for all.
